Induction? What do you think….?
Okay I am 37 weeks now with baby #2. The past 2 weeks I have been having HORRIBLE lower back/hip and pelvis pain, its unbearable now. I’ve been in and out of the Dr. for it (hes probably sick of me) we’ve tried everything, a maternity belt, exercise, he even prescribed me Vicodin! Well I had one Dr in the hospital tell me that its b/c I got pregnant so soon after my 1st (she was 6 months then when I found out about this one) and the only way to help the pain would be to have the baby. Well this pain is interferring with my life, it kills me to sit, stand, walk and even lay down at times, its hard to care for my 15 month old and work (my maternity leave doesn’t start until I have him!) So what do you think? Since I am in so much pain and it just keeps getting worse I was going to talk to my Dr about inducing at my appt on Friday. What happens when a women is in this position?

Definately mention it to your doctor. With my 3rd baby, I walked into the doctor’s office at 37 weeks, and told him I was done. I guess I looked serious cause he talked to the receptionist, looked at his schedule, and said see you tomorrow at 6:00am for a c-section…
that’s kinda controversial, 37 weeks… that’s still a bit early (i think? 38 – 42 is considered full term ? could be wrong.)…
it wouldn’t hurt to talk to your doc about your options. it sucks that you’re in so much pain! try & hang in there!
good luck!
I was enduced at 37 weeks with my 1st baby. I had pre-eclampsia. The first thing they do is insert some medication (I think it’s called Cervadil (sp?)) to soften your cervix. Once that starts, if labor doesn’t start on its own they give you Pitocin via IV to start labor.
Many women say being enduced causes much stronger contraction and pain. I had an epidural and didn’t feel a thing. They gave me the epidural at 2CM because they wanted to break my water so they could put an internal monitor on the baby (the little bugger moved around so much they couldn’t keep up with him with the external monitor on my belly!). All in all I had a very good experience with being enduced.
You’ll get a lot of peoples opinions and experiences with this question. The best thing to do is discuss it with your doctor and make the decision based on his/her recommendations.
Good Luck and Congratulations!
I don’t see anything wrong with talking to your doctor about it. The worse thing that can happen is he’ll say no, but that would be exactly the same result of you not asking.
It’s always good to keep an open dialogue with the doc about anything at all.
I think its up to you, if your doctor will go for it. He might not even want to do it, since there is no real "need", medically speaking.
I had very bad lower back and hip pain with both of my pregnancies – it hurt my back to sit and it hurt my hips to lie down. I could hardly sleep because of how bad my hips hurt.
I got pregnant with my second when my first was only 2 months old – and my pain wasn’t any worse with my second. I don’t know about that being a reason for the pain.
I think if your doctor will do it and you really just want to have the baby now, then go for it. Mine were born at 37 and 38 weeks, both induced. I had easy labors, one vaginal deliver that went very well. The second baby didn’t tollerate labor well (nothing to do with being induced, and she was the 38 weeker) so I ended up having a C section. Without knowing what its like to go into labor naturally, all I can say is that I liked being induced. I knew when I was going to have the baby and I was able to get an epidural before I had any pain. My first labor was completely painless, and pretty fast – only 6 hours. My second I started having contractions before they started the pitocin (from the cervadil they give to ripen the cervix) and I dialeted to 5cm without even realizing my contractions were productive. I got my epidural then and as I said, ended up having a c-section because the baby’s heart rate started dropping when my contractions picked up.
Both babies were a little small, but healthy and went home right away. They’re 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 now and I’m still glad I got induced. And my pain did go away, the minute I gave birth.
I think your doctor is the one who ultimately calls the shots here, and he may feel it’s still too early to induce. Some take a different approach than other doctors, and it’s terrible to realize near term that you’ve chosen someone who turns a blind eye to your back problems simply because they are not life-threatening to you or the baby. I recommend seeking emergency treatment from a licensed chiropractor right away if your doctor won’t induce you. Make sure you find a chiropractor who is experienced with pregnant women and who uses an instrument called an "activator" to give you very gentle adjustments rather than using rough manipulations that pop and crack you. An activator is a spring-loaded device that they apply in a specific way to each mis-alignment in order to give just the right amount of pressure in exactly the right spot. You may also want to see the chiropractor after delivery to be sure your hips and back are returning to their proper positions over time and so no problems will come back even when you’re not pregnant.
I had chronic back problems with my third child from 16 weeks along, and he came 6 years after my twins! My doctor then wouldn’t even consider inducing me until after I hit 40 weeks. Now I am 22 weeks pregnant with my fourth child. With this pregnancy (5 years later), I have had to seek regular treatments from a chiropractor because of back and hip problems, and it has been well worth the extra money! He actually checks for specific alignment problems in pregnant women. And the activator adjustments are primarily all he has used to keep me in alignment. No popping and cracking or rough manipulation of any sort has been required and I am doing great.
I also have a different OBGYN now and he is open to doing an elective induction for me simply because I have 3 children I need to find care for during labor and delivery. However, he will not consider it until I am 39 weeks and an exam shows that my cervix is softening up.
Good luck with everything.
